Blending Modern Design with Ely’s Traditional Spaces

Ely’s architectural heritage spans historic and modern homes, from medieval cottages in the city centre to newer houses on the outskirts. Many properties-especially within conservation areas or near iconic landmarks like Ely Cathedral-require careful consideration when upgrading interiors. Aluminium internal French doors strike a balance between modern aesthetics and functional practicality. Their slim frames allow you to divide living spaces or home offices, creating distinct zones without compromising light or breaking up original features. Whether you’re renovating a Victorian terrace or updating an open-plan family home, these made-to-measure doors offer a versatile, unobtrusive solution that complements both character properties and newer builds commonly found across Ely’s residential areas.

Practical Guidance for Choosing and Ordering in Ely

When selecting internal doors for Ely properties, it’s important to think about more than just style. For homes located within local conservation areas, or those that are listed, check East Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning guidance before making changes-even to interiors. For most unlisted, non-conservation homes, you typically won’t need formal approval, but it pays to choose designs that suit the era and materials of your property.

Aluminium internal French doors are supplied made to your required measurements, allowing for flexible installation in homes with non-standard wall thicknesses or uneven fenland floors. You’ll be able to specify the glazing style, colour, and handles online. It’s a good idea to measure your opening precisely and discuss your plans with your installer or builder before ordering. For older buildings with solid walls or period features, take care to respect any original details and check for hidden pipes or wires in dividing walls. If you’re unsure, seek advice on the recommended installation approach for your property type. Once ordered, your doors will arrive ready for fitting by your chosen professional.

Frequently asked questions

Aluminium internal French doors can work well in period homes, offering a contemporary touch while maintaining light flow. However, if your property is listed or in a conservation area, check with East Cambridgeshire District Council before making any interior alterations to ensure compliance with regulations.
You can customise your doors by choosing from a range of colours, glazing styles, and hardware finishes. Each set is made to measure, allowing for flexible installation in homes old and new.
In most modern or unlisted houses you won’t require planning permission for internal changes. For listed properties or homes in conservation areas, check with local planning authorities before proceeding.
Carefully measure the height and width of your existing door opening at several points. Note any variations, especially in older properties where openings might not be perfectly square. Consult your installer for guidance before finalising your order.
These doors are designed to suit a wide range of wall types, from standard plasterboard partitions to solid or brick internal walls. However, in historic homes with unique wall constructions, additional preparation may be needed prior to fitting.
Smartaview supplies aluminium internal French doors for you or your appointed professional to fit. Installation services are not provided, so arrange a qualified tradesperson locally.
