Are Aluminium Internal Doors Worth the Extra Cost Over Timber?

Aluminium internal doors can cost more than a basic timber alternative. The real question is what the extra spend buys and whether it matters in your home.

Are Aluminium Internal Doors Worth the Extra Cost Over Timber?

Aluminium internal doors usually sit above basic timber doors on upfront price. That does not automatically make them better value, and it does not make timber a false economy.

The fair comparison is between the complete results: frame size, amount of glass, stability, finish, maintenance and how the door supports the wider renovation.

What are you paying for?

The premium attached to aluminium generally buys four things.

Slimmer sightlines

Aluminium supports large glazed areas with relatively slim sections. More of the opening remains glass, allowing more light to pass between rooms.

Dimensional stability

Timber absorbs and releases moisture. Even a well-made door can move as conditions change. Aluminium does not swell, shrink or warp in the same way, helping the door retain consistent gaps and alignment.

A durable finish

Powder coating creates a hard, consistent surface that does not require regular painting or staining. Occasional gentle cleaning is normally enough.

Made-to-measure design

Aluminium systems can combine hinged, sliding or pivot doors with fixed side panels and overlights. The frame colour, glass and grid pattern can be planned as one scheme.

Where timber remains good value

A standard timber door can be the sensible choice for a bedroom, cupboard or secondary room where a solid visual barrier matters more than light.

Timber also suits interiors built around natural materials and traditional joinery. It can be repaired and refinished, and a skilled carpenter can adapt it on site.

There is no reason to pay for a glazed aluminium feature where the project does not benefit from its strengths.

Compare like with like

Do not compare a bespoke glazed aluminium French-door set with the price of one hollow-core timber door. Compare it with a made-to-measure glazed timber set using equivalent safety glass, ironmongery, finishing and installation.

The price gap often looks different once all those elements are included.

Think beyond the purchase price

Long-term value includes the time and cost of maintenance.

A painted timber door may need touching up or refinishing. Seasonal movement can require adjustment. Aluminium avoids much of that work, although hinges, handles and locks on any door may still need occasional care.

The largest return may be visual rather than financial. A well-proportioned glazed divider can bring borrowed light into a hallway, make adjoining rooms feel larger and give an ordinary opening a clear architectural purpose.

When aluminium is worth it

Aluminium is usually worth the premium when:

  • the door is a prominent feature;
  • retaining natural light is important;
  • the opening is wide, tall or made to measure;
  • several doors and screens need consistent sightlines;
  • low maintenance matters; or
  • the project calls for a slim steel-look appearance.

Timber is likely to remain the better-value answer where the door is solid, standard sized and visually secondary.

The verdict

Aluminium internal doors cost more because they do more than close a doorway. They manage light, divide space and create a repeatable architectural language across a home.

If those benefits matter to the project, the premium is easy to justify. If they do not, a good timber door may be all that is required.
