How to Measure for Replacement Table-Top Glass Without Guesswork

The difficulty with replacement table-top glass is not taking one measurement. It is recording every detail that the finished pane needs.

Toughened glass must be cut and finished before it goes through the strengthening process. Once manufactured, it cannot be trimmed to correct a mistake.

Five careful minutes at the table are therefore worth far more than a rushed order.

First decide what the glass is doing

Is the pane protecting a complete surface beneath it, or is it the structural top spanning between supports?

A fully supported protector and a free-standing glass top require different thickness decisions. Measurement alone cannot confirm structural suitability, so ask a competent glass specialist to specify an unsupported top.

What you need

Use:

  • a rigid steel tape measure;
  • a straightedge;
  • a square if the table is rectangular;
  • paper and a pencil; and
  • card or hardboard if a template is required.

Record everything in millimetres. Avoid converting backwards and forwards between units.

Rectangular and square tables

Measure the width at the front, centre and back. Measure the depth at the left, centre and right.

If the readings vary, the table may not be perfectly square. For a protector that must stay inside the edge, base the order on the smallest appropriate dimensions and confirm the intended clearance.

Check the diagonals. If the two diagonal measurements differ, the corners are not perfectly square.

Circular tables

Measure the diameter through the centre in at least two directions. Do not measure only the visible widest point by eye.

If the readings differ, the top may be slightly oval. A template can be more reliable than ordering a nominal circle.

Rounded and shaped corners

“Rounded corners” is not a complete specification. The manufacturer needs the radius or an accurate template.

One simple way to check an existing radius is to place a known circular object or radius gauge against the corner. For irregular or handmade furniture, trace the complete top onto a rigid template material and confirm how the finished glass should relate to that line.

Mark the room-facing side and orientation clearly on any template.

Allowance and overhang

Do not automatically copy the exact table dimensions.

A protective pane may be intentionally set back by a few millimetres to avoid a proud edge. A structural top may have a designed overhang, but the support and glass thickness must be engineered for it.

Decide the finished glass size rather than relying only on the furniture size.

Record every additional detail

Before ordering, confirm:

  • finished width and depth or diameter;
  • glass thickness and type;
  • square or rounded corners;
  • corner radius;
  • exposed-edge finish;
  • any holes, notches or cut-outs;
  • the position of every support; and
  • whether the pane is fully supported or structural.

Holes and notches must be shown from clear datum edges. A small positional error can prevent the glass fitting the base.

Make a final-size drawing

Sketch the pane as viewed from above and write every finished measurement on it. Add a photograph of the table and base for context.

Then measure it again independently. Do not simply reread the first notes and reproduce the same mistake.

Before placing the order

Confirm that the available product size, thickness and finishing options are suitable for the application. SmartaView's standard online cut-to-size product is 6mm toughened glass; that does not make it suitable for every unsupported table top.

Where the project is compatible, configure the finished size and see the price online at made-to-measure glass options.

Made-to-measure glass is manufactured to the dimensions you approve and is not normally returnable for a change of mind, so check every figure before checkout.
