How to Clean and Maintain a Roof Lantern Safely

Regular, gentle cleaning keeps a roof lantern looking clear and helps you spot maintenance issues early. The priority is safety: avoid walking on the roof or leaning ladders against the frame.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD IT BE CLEANED?

Frequency depends on location. Trees, coastal air, traffic pollution and bird activity may require more frequent attention. A spring and autumn check is a sensible starting point, with extra cleaning when debris builds up.

CLEANING THE EXTERNAL GLASS

Use a telescopic water-fed pole from a safe position at ground level where possible. Start by rinsing away grit, then use clean water and a mild, non-abrasive solution suitable for coated glass. Avoid metal scrapers and harsh chemicals.

CLEANING THE INTERNAL GLASS

Use stable, appropriate access equipment and never overreach. A soft microfibre pad and minimal cleaning solution reduce streaks. If the lantern is high or difficult to reach, employ a professional cleaner.

CARE FOR POWDER-COATED ALUMINIUM

Wipe the frame with a soft cloth, warm water and mild detergent. Do not use abrasive pads, solvent cleaners or strong alkaline products that could damage the finish. Coastal properties may need more frequent rinsing.
