Replacement Glass for Doors, Cabinets, Shelves and Internal Screens

Broken or scratched glass does not always mean replacing the furniture, door or screen around it.

Where the frame or support remains sound, a new pane cut to the correct size can restore the item with far less waste and disruption.

The important part is choosing glass that suits the way it will be supported and used.

Internal glazed doors

Glass in a door is exposed to impact and movement, so safety is the first consideration. Toughened or laminated glass is commonly used depending on the door, pane size and applicable requirements.

Match the finished dimensions, thickness and edge treatment of the existing pane. If the glass is retained inside a frame, check how much is hidden in the rebate rather than measuring only the visible area.

Clear glass carries the most light. Reeded, satin and frosted finishes can introduce privacy without turning the doorway into a solid barrier.

Cabinet and display glass

Cabinet glass is usually smaller and more lightly loaded, but accurate sizing still matters. Measure the opening at more than one point and allow the clearance required by the retaining method.

Clear glass keeps the contents fully visible. Reeded or satin glass can hide everyday clutter while giving the cabinet a more decorative finish.

Where the edges remain exposed, a polished finish creates a cleaner and safer presentation.

Glass shelves

A shelf carries weight rather than simply filling an opening. Its suitability depends on:

  • glass thickness;
  • width and depth;
  • the distance between supports;
  • the load placed on it; and
  • any holes or notches required by the brackets.

Toughened glass is commonly chosen because it is stronger than ordinary annealed glass and has safer breakage characteristics. However, no single thickness is correct for every shelf. Ask a competent glass specialist to verify the specification where the load or span is substantial.

Internal screens and room dividers

Replacing a pane in a fixed screen can refresh the whole installation. Clear glass preserves an open view, while privacy finishes can adapt the screen to a new use such as a home office or dressing area.

Check whether the panel sits close to the floor or beside a door, because safety-glazing rules may apply.

Why toughened glass is useful

Toughened glass is heat treated to improve its strength. If it breaks, it is designed to fragment into smaller pieces rather than the large sharp shards associated with ordinary glass.

It must be cut, drilled and shaped before toughening. Once processed, it cannot be trimmed on site. Every dimension, hole and cut-out therefore needs to be confirmed before the order enters manufacture.

Measure the finished glass, not just the gap

The required size depends on how the pane is held.

A pane sitting inside a frame may extend beyond the visible opening. A shelf supported on clips may need deliberate clearance. A cabinet pane may sit in a routed channel.

Where possible, measure the old pane. If it is broken or missing, inspect the frame carefully and ask the fitter or glass supplier what allowance is needed.

Replace rather than rebuild

Cut-to-size glass allows a sound door, cabinet or screen to stay in use. You choose the finished dimensions and glass appearance, then replace only the part that is damaged or no longer suits the room.

Configure made-to-measure 6mm toughened glass at cut-to-size glass options. Confirm that the available thickness, size range and finish are appropriate for the intended application before ordering.
