Roof Lanterns for Kitchen Extensions: Sizes, Styles and Design Ideas

A roof lantern can turn a kitchen extension into the brightest part of the home. It brings daylight deep into the plan, adds height and creates a natural focal point above cooking, dining or social space.

SIZE THE LANTERN TO THE ROOM

Bigger is not automatically better. Allow enough solid roof around the lantern for structure, insulation, lighting and a comfortable visual border. A well-proportioned lantern feels integrated rather than dominating the ceiling.

POSITION IT WITH PURPOSE

A lantern centred above an island highlights the working and social heart of the kitchen. Above a dining table, it creates a distinct zone. Consider the view from the original house so the roof geometry aligns with important sightlines.

CHOOSE A FRAME COLOUR

Anthracite grey and black create a crisp contemporary outline. Lighter finishes can feel softer, while a colour matched to doors and windows unifies the extension. Powder-coated aluminium offers a slim, durable appearance.

PLAN LIGHTING FOR NIGHT-TIME

Daylight is only half the design. Combine discreet downlights around the perimeter with pendants above the island or table. Avoid placing fittings where they reflect awkwardly in the glass.

BALANCE GLASS THROUGHOUT THE ROOM

If the extension also has wide sliding or bifold doors, consider total solar gain and ventilation. Solar-control glass may suit exposed orientations. The roof lantern and vertical glazing should be specified together.

STYLE IDEAS

Warm timber, textured stone and planting soften the clean aluminium lines. Deep blue or green cabinetry can look especially vivid beneath natural overhead light. Keep tall units away from the brightest sightline where possible.
