The concern about bifold door security is understandable. A large expanse of glass, several moving panels and a track-based opening system may appear more vulnerable than a conventional solid door.

In practice, a well-specified aluminium bifold door can provide excellent security. The important point is that not every system offers the same protection. Frame strength, locking hardware, glazing, cylinders, hinges and installation quality all affect how resistant the finished doors are to forced entry.

Before buying, look beyond general claims such as “high security”. Ask what has been tested, which security features are included and whether the certification applies to the exact configuration you are ordering.


Are Bifold Doors Secure?

Yes, quality aluminium bifold doors can be highly secure. Aluminium provides a strong and stable frame, while modern systems can include multi-point locks, anti-lift protection, secure cylinders and laminated glass.

However, security depends on the complete door set. A strong lock fitted into a weak frame will not provide adequate protection. Equally, a premium frame can still be compromised by unsuitable glass, exposed hardware or poor installation.

A secure bifold door should be treated as one complete system comprising:

  • The outer frame

  • The individual folding panels

  • The traffic door

  • The locks and cylinders

  • The hinges, rollers and tracks

  • The glass and glazing retainers

  • The fixings securing the frame to the building

Every one of these elements must resist attack and continue working together.


Look for Independently Tested Security

PAS 24 is a recognised UK security standard used to assess the ability of windows and external door sets to resist common methods of attack.

Testing may include attempts to manipulate locks, force open panels, attack vulnerable joints and place pressure on the door set using tools.

When comparing bifold doors, ask whether the exact system has been independently tested to the applicable PAS 24 standard.

It is important to confirm that the certification applies to your proposed configuration. A manufacturer may offer several panel arrangements, thresholds, locks and glazing choices, and not every possible variation will necessarily be covered by the same test evidence.

Request written confirmation showing:

  • The security standard achieved

  • The specific bifold door system tested

  • The panel configurations covered

  • The required lock and cylinder specification

  • The glazing required to maintain compliance

  • Any threshold or hardware restrictions

Do not assume that a security badge shown on a manufacturer’s website automatically covers every door they produce.


What Is Secured by Design?

Secured by Design is a police-backed initiative that promotes products and building designs intended to reduce crime.

Products carrying the relevant accreditation must meet specified security requirements and provide supporting test evidence.

Secured by Design accreditation can provide additional reassurance, particularly for:

  • New-build homes

  • High-value properties

  • Doors in less visible locations

  • Projects with specific insurance requirements

  • Developments where enhanced security forms part of the specification

As with PAS 24, confirm that the accreditation applies to the exact product and configuration you intend to purchase.


Multi-Point Locking

A conventional door may rely primarily on one central locking point. Quality bifold doors use a multi-point locking system that secures the active panel at several positions around its perimeter.

Depending on the system, these locking points may include:

  • Hooks

  • Bolts

  • Shoot bolts

  • Compression points

  • Top and bottom locking points

When the mechanism is fully engaged, force applied to one part of the door is distributed across several points rather than concentrated around a single latch.

This also pulls the door firmly against its weather seals, helping with air and water resistance as well as security.

When viewing or specifying a bifold door, ask the supplier to explain how the lock operates. Check whether lifting the handle engages the locking points and whether a key must then be used to secure the mechanism completely.


Pay Particular Attention to the Traffic Door

The traffic door is the panel that opens independently for everyday access without requiring the complete bifold set to be folded back.

Because it is used most frequently and operates like a conventional entrance door, it is one of the most likely points to be targeted.

The traffic door should have:

  • A robust multi-point locking mechanism

  • A suitable security cylinder

  • Secure handles and fixings

  • Strong hinges or concealed hinge protection

  • Correct alignment with the frame and keeps

It is also important to use the lock properly. Simply pulling the traffic door closed may engage only a latch. The handle and key may still need to be operated to engage all of the available locking points.

Follow the manufacturer’s locking instructions and make sure everyone in the household knows how to secure the door fully.


Choose a Secure Lock Cylinder

The cylinder is the component into which the key is inserted. If the cylinder can be snapped, drilled or manipulated, an intruder may be able to operate the multi-point mechanism despite the strength of the rest of the door.

Look for a cylinder designed to resist common attack methods, including:

  • Snapping

  • Drilling

  • Picking

  • Bumping

  • Plug extraction

The cylinder should also be correctly sized. A cylinder that projects too far beyond the handle or protective escutcheon may provide an easier point for an intruder to grip and attack.

Ask which cylinder is supplied as standard and whether enhanced options are available.


Toughened Glass and Laminated Glass Are Different

Large bifold door panels normally require safety glazing because they extend close to floor level and could be struck by a person.

Toughened and laminated glass both improve safety, but they behave differently when broken.

Toughened Glass

Toughened glass is heat-treated to increase its strength. If it breaks, it is designed to fragment into many relatively small pieces rather than large, sharp shards.

This reduces the risk of serious injury. However, once the pane has shattered, an opening may be created within the door.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass contains an interlayer bonded between sheets of glass. If the glass is broken, the fragments remain attached to that interlayer.

This makes it considerably more difficult to create an immediate opening through the pane. An intruder may break the surface glass but still need to spend additional time and make more noise to penetrate the interlayer.

Laminated glass is therefore worth considering for:

  • Ground-floor bifold doors

  • Doors concealed from neighbouring properties

  • High-value homes

  • Properties left unoccupied regularly

  • Locations identified as presenting a higher security risk

Confirm whether laminated glass is required to achieve the security certification claimed for the door.


How Is the Glass Retained?

The glass must be securely held within each aluminium panel. Some doors are internally glazed, meaning the beads that retain the glass can only be removed from inside the property.

Other systems may use external beads combined with security clips, glazing tapes or additional mechanical retention.

External glazing is not automatically insecure, but the retention method must have been designed and tested to prevent the sealed glass unit from being removed from outside.

Ask the supplier:

  • Whether the doors are internally or externally glazed

  • How the glass is mechanically retained

  • Whether the glazing arrangement formed part of the security test


Can Bifold Door Panels Be Lifted from the Track?

A common concern is that bifold panels could simply be lifted from their tracks.

Secure systems use anti-lift features intended to prevent the panels from being raised or disengaged from the running gear while the doors are closed.

These may include:

  • Concealed anti-lift pins

  • Interlocking frame profiles

  • Captive rollers

  • Protected track components

  • Top and bottom locking bolts

These components may not be obvious when looking at the finished door, so ask the supplier to identify the anti-lift protection within the system.

A bifold door should not rely on its weight alone to prevent the panels from being removed.


Hinges and Intermediate Panels

A bifold set has more hinges and panel junctions than a conventional door. Every connection between adjacent panels must resist levering and manipulation.

Quality systems protect these areas through a combination of strong hinges, concealed fixings, interlocking profiles and locking points between the folding panels.

Inspect a demonstration model where possible. Hinges should feel substantial, with no excessive movement between the panels.

Visible screws or fixings on the exterior should not provide an obvious way to dismantle the door from outside.


Frame Strength Matters

Aluminium is particularly suitable for bifold doors because it combines high strength with relatively slim frame profiles.

However, not all aluminium systems use the same extrusion thickness, internal reinforcement or corner construction.

A secure frame should resist:

  • Twisting

  • Levering

  • Separation at the corners

  • Movement around the locking keeps

The locking keeps must be fixed into substantial sections of the frame. If the frame flexes significantly under pressure, even a sophisticated lock may be less effective.


Installation Is Part of the Security System

A security-tested bifold door can still perform poorly if it is fitted incorrectly.

The outer frame must be securely fixed into suitable structural material around the complete opening. Fixings placed only into plasterboard, loose masonry or weak finishing materials will not provide the resistance the door was designed to achieve.

The installation should include:

  • Appropriate mechanical fixings at suitable intervals

  • Firm packers behind key fixing points

  • A square, level and correctly supported frame

  • Properly aligned locking keeps

  • Secure perimeter sealing

  • Correct adjustment of every panel

The structure above the doors must also be properly supported. Excessive movement or deflection from a lintel or steel beam can force the frame out of alignment and prevent the locks from engaging correctly.

Everyday Ways to Keep Bifold Doors Secure

Even the best security specification needs to be used correctly. Once the doors are installed:

  • Engage every locking point whenever the property is unattended

  • Do not leave keys visible or within reach of the glazing

  • Keep the tracks clean so the panels close and align correctly

  • Have stiff, loose or misaligned panels inspected promptly

  • Replace damaged locks, handles or cylinders rather than continuing to use them

  • Keep hedges and external planting managed so the doors remain visible

  • Consider lighting, alarms and cameras as part of a wider home-security plan

A door that is only partially locked cannot provide the level of resistance demonstrated during full security testing.
