What Is a Thermally Broken Aluminium Door, and Why Does It Matter?

If you've been researching aluminium bifold or sliding doors, you'll have encountered the term 'thermally broken'. It's used consistently by quality manufacturers as a mark of technical superiority, but what does it actually mean, and why does it matter for the performance of the door in your home?

The Problem with Aluminium and Heat

Aluminium is an excellent structural material, strong, lightweight, and formable into very slim profiles. But it's also a very effective conductor of heat. In an ordinary aluminium frame, the metal creates a continuous bridge between the outside of your home (which is cold in winter) and the inside (which is warm). Heat travels from the warm side to the cold side through the metal frame. The result: cold frames, surface condensation, and significant heat loss through what should be a sealed, insulating boundary.

This is why early aluminium windows and doors had a reputation for being cold and prone to condensation, the material itself was part of the problem.

What a Thermal Break Does

A thermally broken aluminium door has the frame profile split into two separate sections, an outer section and an inner section, which are connected not by a continuous strip of aluminium, but by a non-conducting polyamide (plastic) bar or foam insert. This is the thermal break.

The polyamide conducts heat approximately 2,000 times less effectively than aluminium. By interrupting the metal path through the frame, the thermal break prevents cold from the outside surface of the frame reaching the interior surface. The inner face of the frame stays at a temperature close to the room temperature, not the outside temperature.

What This Means in Practice

No cold frames

The interior face of a thermally broken frame doesn't become cold to the touch on a winter morning. The room around the door feels consistently warm rather than cold at the perimeter, particularly important in large glass doors where the frame perimeter is substantial.

No condensation on the frame

Condensation forms on surfaces that are below the dew point temperature. A cold aluminium frame in a warm, humid kitchen will condense moisture consistently. A thermally broken frame, staying at near-room-temperature, does not. This eliminates a persistent maintenance and comfort problem that affected older aluminium doors.

Better thermal efficiency

Thermally broken frames reduce heat loss through the door assembly, contributing to a lower whole-unit U-value. This directly affects heating costs and carbon footprint, and is a requirement for meeting current UK Building Regulations (Part L) in new construction.

Building Regulations compliance

For any new extension, conversion, or new-build in England and Wales, Part L of the Building Regulations requires that door and window assemblies meet minimum U-value targets. Thermally broken aluminium frames, combined with quality glazing, meet these targets. Non-thermally-broken frames almost certainly do not.

Is Every Aluminium Door Thermally Broken?

No. Basic aluminium frames, particularly in commercial applications where thermal performance is less critical, may not include a thermal break. In the residential market, all quality suppliers specify thermally broken frames as standard. Does a Thermal Break Affect the Appearance?

No. The polyamide bar is concealed within the frame profile. From outside or inside, the door looks identical to a non-thermally-broken frame. The visual profile width is no wider, the colour options are unchanged, the operation is unaffected. The difference is entirely in the performance.
