A roof lantern is one of the most architecturally striking glazing elements you can add to a home. It's also one of the most misunderstood, confused variously with roof lights, skylights, orangery roofs, and glass domes. Here's a clear explanation of what a roof lantern actually is, how it differs from other overhead glazing, and what it delivers.
The Definition
A roof lantern is a raised glazed structure that sits proud of the flat roof plane of a single-storey extension or addition. Unlike a flat roof light, which is flush or near-flush with the roof surface, a lantern projects upward, typically by 300–800mm. It is glazed on all faces: the roof slope faces, the ridge, and sometimes the vertical sides at the base.
The result, seen from inside the room, is a ceiling feature, a raised, light-filled volume that draws the eye upward and floods the space below with light from multiple angles. From outside, the lantern reads as an architectural element sitting on the roof, with the same visual presence as a traditional orangery or conservatory rooftop.
How a Roof Lantern Differs from a Flat Roof Light
The key distinctions are geometry and light quality. A flat roof light captures light primarily from directly overhead, it faces upward and admits light that strikes its horizontal surface. A lantern, with its angled glazed faces and ridge, captures light from a wider arc of sky. On a winter's day, when the sun is low in the sky, the angled faces of a lantern continue to admit useful light that a horizontal flat roof light receives only obliquely.
A lantern also creates a different spatial experience from inside. The raised profile means the ceiling in the lantern zone is higher than the surrounding ceiling, adding a perceived generosity of space and a distinct architectural character to the room.
Materials
Modern aluminium roof lanterns use thermally broken aluminium profiles, the same engineering approach as premium bifold and sliding doors. The aluminium frame is slim enough to maximise the glazed area while providing the structural rigidity the lantern requires. Powder-coated in any RAL colour, the frame can be matched precisely to bifold door frames, window frames, and other aluminium elements in the extension.
Older roof lanterns were sometimes timber-framed, or made from uPVC. Aluminium has largely superseded both in the premium market, it achieves slimmer frames, better thermal performance, and far greater longevity.
